Have you heard of the Mason Jar Salad craze? They are perfect for healthy eating on the run and getting daily servings of vegetables. These guys are super fast and easy way to make and you can put together a week’s worth of salads in 20 minutes! Thanks to Pinterest, the Mason Jar salad has helped many of us get everything we need to food prep and pack Mason Jar salads for a week! Here are five easy steps to making your favorite salads for a week.
Step 1: Prep Your Ingredients and Mason Jars
If you are adding a meat protein source like chicken or beef, get it started on the grill, in the oven or on the stove top. While you are cooking your protein, start your food prep: chopping your washed vegetables, making sure you have enough for your lunches for the week. Get your Mason jars lined out and ready to fill!
Step 2: Add Dressing
Yes, we START with the dressing on the bottom of the jar. Why you ask….see Step 3. 🙂
Step 3: Add Your “Heavy” Vegetables
Next, add vegetables that won’t soak up dressing and become soggy. This includes broccoli, cauliflower, onions, carrots, etc. If you have something like cucumbers, put them somewhere in the middle. Step 3: Add Your Greens and Leafy Veggies
Next up is lettuce, kale, or any other leafy vegetables of your choice, and pack them in. Layering the heavy vegetables first keeps the greens separated from the dressing so the greens don’t get soggy over the course of the week.
Step 4: Add Anything Else
You could add these before the greens, I like to add them at the end when I have my leafies (is that a word?) packed in to get as many of them as possible. It also prevents me from overdoing the cheese, craisins and nuts, which are my favorite salad toppers! A super-easy way to practice portion control!
Step 5: Cover and Store in The Fridge
That’s it! Store your Mason Jar Salads the fridge and grab one as you go out the door in the morning! When you are ready to eat later in the day, dump all the contents into a large bowl or on a large plate. Since the dressing comes out last, it ends up on top of your salad!
